We will continue to map out plans for the 1998 Echo Park Artists 
Festival. It takes a small army of volunteers to help organize and 
stage the festival. If you want to help, please call (213) 250-4155  or

  FESTIVAL UPDATE
The tentative date for this year’s Echo Park Artists Festival is 
Saturday, October 10th.   This  year, Echo Park Arts wants to  improve and expand upon last year’s festival--which attracted more than 1,000 participants--by adding live theatrical performances as well as hiring a curator to organize the professional  artists exhibition.  
 

The festival will also include the popular tours of local artists 
studios  a professional and student art exhibtion, kids art workshop and live entertainment. Call (213) 250-4155 if you are interested in 
putting  your studio space on the  route. There is still plenty of time 
to suggest possible new activities. 

  


SIDEWALK ART SHOW
The monthly Echo Park Sidewalk Art Show will be held on Saturday, April 18 from 10 AM to 1 PM in front of Peerless Hardware Store on Sunset Boulevard.  The  first show last month attracted many residents to the displays  of 10 local  artists. It was  a good morning for the artists to get to know residents and each other. To sign up for the next show, please call (213) 250-4155. ARTISTS ON THE GO

Photographic artist Martin Cox will be exhibiting his most recent work in London May 18-30 at the Groucho Club in Soho. The show, titled ``and other Desert Cities,’’ includes photographic exploration of  the desolate areas  surrounding  Los Angeles, including the town of Rice in the East Mojave and the Salton Sea.  
 

Olivia Sanchez-Brown, Alicia Faenz and Gloria Alvarez have teamed up to produce a book on writers responding to German expressionism.  The book--which should be completed by June--is  being financed by the San Francisco Poets ,the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Beyond Baroque.  

Olivia also  exhibited in two recent shows at Artshare and Open 
Studio Weekend at the Santa Fe Art Colony.  Both are in downtown Los Angeles. 
      
The work of Peter Shire was on display  last month at L.A. Artcore 
in a show titled ``Peter Shire: Form Follows Fantasy.’’  

Dewey Ambrosino  will have one of his paintings  on display  in 
April in a group show at Beyond Baroque.  The exhibit--``Local 
Heroes’’--features the work that was included in a literary zine. Dewey is also in the middle of renovating a space on Echo Park Avenue for his studio.  

Photographer William Nettles and neighborhood activist Ron Emler 
are  working on a historical book of  Echo Park that is scheduled to be published by late summer. ``Ghosts of Echo Park--a Pictorial History’’ will illustrate Echo Park’s past with informative articles as well as old photographs  and maps.   

Hillary Mushkin, Erica Suderberg, and Joseph Santarromana  will  exhibit their work at  uberMain  as part of a group show that will begin with a 7 PM reception on Saturday, May 3.  

Hillary and Joseph will present digital photos and Erica will exhibit an installation piece.  uberMain is located in downtown Los Angeles  at 560 S. Main St. 
 


Local Shows & Exhibits

Ojala Fine Arts & Crafts, which focuses on the work of Echo Park 
area artists, opens its doors on Saturday May 3 with a reception from  1 PM to 3 PM. The month of  May will include  the work of artists  Katrina Alexy ,  Jean Torre and  rene.  In June, the paintings of Aaron Donovan will be featured in a solo show.    Ojala is located at 1547 Echo Park Ave.  For more information, call (213) 250-4155.  

The Basement Coffee House at the Echo Park United Methodist Church will  have an open mic  night on April 18  for all comics, poets, songwriters and artists.  It’s The House of Poets on  April 25, which features an open writing  workshop  followed by an open reading. The Basement Coffee House is located at the corner of Alvarado and Reservoir Avenues. The doors open at 8 PM.  Call (213) 413-9111. 

Puro Arte will present the performance art objects of Christopher 
Sicat  in``Fake’’ during the month of April.  Puro Arte is located at
