  FIRST STEPS

About two dozen artists and residents turned out for the first meeting of Echo Park Arts in January.  Participants offered up a variety of ideas on how the group could support and attract artists and art lovers.  The proposals included the formation of a nonprofit corporation to support the arts, the staging of frequent exhibitions and a newsletter.  It was clear that at the top of most wish list was the establishment of an arts and cultural center for Echo Park.  Sounds like we are going to be busy.

 DIGITAL ARTS

Painter Stephan Metts is opening up a multimedia arts center for young people in Echo Park.  Onramp, which is located in a storefront on Glendale Blvd. Near the Sunset Boulevard bridge, will teach kids ages 13-17 valuable computer graphics and design skills as part of an after school program.  The project is funded by a grant from Liberty Hills, a group which supports community and technology projects, and will work in partnership with the nearby Community Coalition.  Onramp should be up and running by April. Stephan hopes other local artist will eventually volunteer to help kids learn the digital arts.  Call him at 213.660.5010

ARTIST ON THE GO

Katrina Alexy recently produced and performed in Manual Puig's "Under A Mantle of Stars" at the Tsunami Cafe Basement Theater in Silver Lake.  Katrina is currently taking photos of Koreatown for the archives of the Los Angeles Central Library.

Photographer Duana Whitehead and painter Frank Romero had an exhibition of their work at the Tirage gallery in La Canada-Flintridge.  Duana also has photos on display at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

Maria Leon will display her sculpture at the Echo Park Community Garden.  She will also be involved in creating tile work for a fountain located near the garden entrance.

Four landscape paintings by John Kilduff were included in the December issue of New American Paintings

Artist rene will have several of his paintings including some new pieces on transcendence on display at Borders bookstore in Glendale during March.

Elizabeth Marcel is working on a line of unique, handmade handbags that could end up at Saks Fifth Avenue stores in Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas.  Elizabeth is using some unusual materials--you'll have to ask her about that--and is using a kiln to create enameled pieces for clasps.

Hillary Mushkin was part of a group video show in December at Marilyn Studios in Los Angeles.  In May, Hillary, Erica Suderberg, and Joey Santarromana will exhibit their work at UberMain in downtown Los Angeles.

Stephan Metts will exhibit his work in a February 28th show of paintings and architectural issues at the Post Gallery in downtown Los Angeles.

Steve Criqui curated a group show--Color Me Mind--that opens February 19th at LACE

A new ceramics studio--Atelier Carlyle--is a lone bright spot on an otherwise ugly stretch of Glendale Boulevard.  Drop by, say hello and discover an unexpected studio space.  1809 1/2 Glendale Boulevard.
